Where to spend and save in kitchens
Kitchens are very key part of the modern home with open plan being firmly here to stay. But where should you invest your hard earned money and where can you skimp?
Good quality cooking appliances are very important to the overall result of your kitchen. After all, cooking is what your kitchen is designed for so it makes sense to invest in the best you can afford. Ovens in particular will last a lot longer if they good quality to start with – consider a self cleaning model that will save you the annoying task of cleaning with nasty chemicals. When it comes to energy efficiency, prioritise items that are on all day such as fridges and freezers over ovens or cook tops (unless you are the new Nigella Lawson and have the oven on all day!).
Door handles is an area you can skimp on still get a great look and feel. Handles shouldn’t cost you the earth, with quality door handles being available for as low as $5 per handle. Unless you are lucky enough to live very close to the ocean and corrosion is an issue, stainless steel handles are not really a great investment with zinc alloy doing a sterling job in its place.
Door hardware is however an area not to skimp. Without good door hardware, your kitchen will start to fall apart and look tacky as the doors can fall off under the weight of stacked drawers. Opt for door hardware that has a long warranty and the most load carrying capacity you can afford. Brio make some of the best door hardware on the market with high grade stainless steel used in all applications. If your drawers are large and deep, this is even more important as low quality hinges will cause you issues very quickly.
Cabinet fronts are very easy update, provided your cupboard internals and door hardware are solid so don’t go overboard and blow the budget on these. They can be updated over and over again as your mood or fashions change. Opt for a hardwearing material like laminate or 2 pack if you are on a strict budget or go for timber veneer if you are after a timber look.
Bench tops are a key item to spend on in any kitchen renovation. No matter what budget point you are at, there is a quality and heat resistant bench top option to suit that is stain proof and easy to clean. Look at caesarstone, granite or stainless steel materials to suit your look and feel. Solid timber looks beautiful but can need a bit more care – especially if used in areas exposed to water or heat frequently.
